Over 100 Students Learn HTML and CSS Coding Using CodeAcademy.com
LOS ANGELES, CA – The Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF), Google and the founders of Sabio.la, Gregorio Rojas, and Broccoli City, Brandon McEachern, respectively, hosted the LOFT – Google Coding Jam Session in LA. The free, bilingual event instructed minority youth on how to build a website and web applications using HTML and CSS at the Boyle Heights Technology Youth Center from 12 – 3 p.m. More than 100 students and their parents attended. LOFT is HHF’s award-winning leadership and workforce development program which identifies, prepares, positions, and places talented underrepresented minorities on career paths with a focus on innovation in competitive fields including STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), finance and entrepreneurship, education, among others.
“Driving this effort is the deep-seated belief that youth throughout every single one of our communities in Los Angeles and throughout the country deserve to have access to high-level technology programs and trainings,” said Emanuel Pleitez, LA resident and Chair of HHF.
“LOFT was thrilled to partner with Google and social innovators like Sabio and Broccolicity to empower youth from LA through the skills necessary to be prepared to be world-class innovators and help build the future of our communities, our city, and globally. We believe there is no greater equalizer than technology education.”
Also contributing was Christopher Temblador of Ad Inicio and Nuevo South who house the LOFT Innovation center in South LA. The event hosted students from Camino Nuevo S.C., LA Fetra, Don Bosco Tech Int., Youthbuild Boyle Heights, Ecel Charter, San Gabriel Valley, Conservation Corps, and South East High School.
“We are thrilled with the turnout at the Coding Jam Session and look forward to hosting similar efforts across the country,” said Antonio Tijerino, president and CEO of HHF. “LOFT is focused on innovation to meet America’s priorities and we believe through technology, our youth are leaders of today, not tomorrow.”
